Social network can not be as the trial court
After reading the both the Chapter 1 from "Clay Shirky's here come everybody" and Malcolm Gladwell's "Small Change". The two articles both discusses one story. "A men names Even use the social network help his friend Ivan to find the lost cellphone." The "Small Change"'s author think the story shows the power of the social network, and the weak-tie world is good at things like helping Evan get phones back from teen-age girls. But i am more in favor of "Clay Shirky's here come every body"'s point of view. The social network (new media like facebooks ,twitter) help to creat groups, and also easily lead to group activity. This group activity are working without the managerial imperative and outside the previous strictures that bound their effectiveness. In this story Evan post all the girl's Sasha ' photos, personal informations, his boyfriend ,his brother's information and all the process of the incident. This mobilize the enthusiasm of the readers. Some of readers may also have lost their cellphone, wallet or something like. So the similar emotion make them to form a "group". Through this group, Sasha's privacy has exposed, and someone even advocated physical confrontation. We could blame Evan for letting these kind racist and sexist conversations take place. Because the cellphone is not so expensive to let Evan spend countless time on this incident. It's more about emotional than financial. And also Sasha pay much more than the cellphone's value. In case of the network is not true life, people's moral values on the network easily be weakened. And social network are effective at increasing participation by lessening the level of motivation. So its easy to generate "Violence". Such violence may even be more significant and efficient than the impact of the traditional activism. The Social network is not the trail court. We can use it to help the people who need bone-marrow, but not to judge the people.
