Intellectual property and Free culture

After I reading the chapter one(Creators) of the book free culture. I have a certain degree of understanding of copyright and free culture. We live in a world that celebrates “property.”  And the ideas , copyrights, arts work are also part of property, it calls “intellectual property”. A large, diverse, and modern society cannot flourish without intellectual property. But actually many great art works is precisely infringed the copyright of others. For example like Walter Disney, he took some old stories and retold them in a way that carried them into a new age like Snow White , Fantasia , Pinocchio, Dumbo. He animated the stories ,with both characters and light. But he Re-interpreting the dark part and make it funny. By today's point of view, his practice is a violation of  “intellectual property”. Another example is Doujinshi what is the comic manga in japan, it take a mainstream comic and develop it differently—with a different story line. Or the comic can keep the character in character but change its look slightly. Actually these works are also illegal. But no one will sue them, because there is plenty of value out there that “property” doesn’t capture. Actually the great “creativity” upon the old stories or original art artwork give people a new view and new exciting experience. Appropriate opening for the copyright will make the artists have more space to creat. Relate to today’s new meidia work like remix, collage, some installations, these art styles all have used the existence of copyright and creativity in varying degrees to a new art works.  Like the book said all culture are free to some degree, and the point is how free is the culture, free culture are cultures that leave a great deal open for others to build upon. However that does not mean we don’t need “property”,  re-creativity is not copy and we should find a balance between intellectual and free culture.

The project "Crossing" in Nuit Blache

The project "Crossing" make the crowds drawn to Nuit Blanche will find their foot traffic oddly echoed by virtual figures projected onto the canted walls of the Royal Ontario Museum’s Crystal façade. The contours and planes of the architecture, activated by the animation, will set the boundaries and surfaces by which the clambering figures must find their way. Sometimes the figures will wrap around the bends in the faceted façade or find themselves mirrored, magnified or transformed on a nearby or distant facet. At other times the figures will seem to have penetrated the architecture and will be seen, x-ray-like, inside it. Occasionally a figure or two will ascend to the top as if climbing into the sky. I like this work most in Nuit Blache. It is a installation, combine the digital art(what I learn) and the architecture. It use the Special appearance of the building to make the figures in the video have different field and also different direction. And the figures action also changed by the appearance. The crystal material make the figure more like walking on the street.

This project give me a inspiration that digital Arts did not just confined to screen, paper, these traditional materials. The work also can combine the with the environment and other art form like industrial Design, architecture, sculpture. And also the interaction with the audience will also be a future trend.

My Idea of Remix Project.

Firstly I have checked the  definition of the word “Remix”. A remix is an alternative version of a song, made from an original version. This term is also used for any alterations of media other than song (films, literature etc.).   Actually the artist can use remix to change the style, form or content of the original art work. A jazz song remix with a rock N roll rhythm will give new power new life of the original smooth lyrics.  A war film fragment remix with comedy fragment and canned laugher may will make people feel funny. That’s  what the remix change the art work’s content or style. For example, the DJ Earworm remix all the popular songs  to one song, like a
music collage, it changed all the seperate song's style and content and represented to a new meaning.
